Understanding Disobedience in the Bible
The Concept of Disobedience in the Bible
I’m sittin here, thinkin bout all them times I didnt listen to god, and it’s like, alot.
My mind keep wanderin, and I forget to, you know, hear what god’s tryin to tell me; it’s pretty easy to get caught up in my own stuff.
But, apparently, the bible’s all: disobedience is bad, and we should totes understand what it means to disobey god, or somethin.
The Bible says,
“And if ye be disobedient, and refuse to hear, the soul that doth not hearken unto the voice of the LORD in the wilderness shall be destroyed from among the people” (Acts 3:23, referencing Leviticus 23:29, KJV).
It’s like, this verse is tryin to tell us somethin: we gotta listen to god, and do what he says, ya know?
The Consequences of Not Listening to God
So like, when we dont listen to god, we can get in big trouble, and it’s not good.
I’m thinkin bout king saul, who god told to, like, destroy the amalekites, but he didnt, and he kept some of their stuff instead (1 samuel 15:1-11); that wasnt a good idea, alot of bad things happend.
He didnt listen, and it cost him everythin: his kingdom, and all that jazz.
Then there’s jonah, who tried to run away from god’s instructions to, you know, preach to them people in nineveh (jonah 1:1-3); that didnt go so well for him, neither.
He got all disobedient, and next thing you know, he’s in the belly of a whale, prayin for forgiveness, and it’s like, yeah, dont be like jonah.
Examples of Obedience and Disobedience in the Bible
There’s alot of stories in the bible, where people either listened to god, or they didnt.
Take abraham, who god told to leave his family, and his home, and go to some other place (genesis 12:1-4); he did, and it was good.
He listened, and it worked out pretty good for him: he got to be the father of a big nation, and all that.
On the other hand, we got moses, who, at first, listened to god, but then he didnt, and he hit the rock twice, and that was bad (numbers 20:2-12); he shouldnt of done that.
So, yeah, we should probly listen to god, and do what he says, or we might end up like moses, and that wouldnt be good, neither.
Old Testament Characters Who Didn’t Listen to God
The Beginning of Disobedience: Adam and Eve
Me personally, i’m always thinking what would of happened if Adam and Eve had of listened to God in the Garden of Eden, like it’s a big what if.
The Bible says,
“And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death.” (Romans 7:10, KJV).
It’s kinda weird to think about, but this verse make me realize disobedience can have some pretty bad consquences, you know?
Apparently, Adam and Eve’s disobedience led to sin entering the world, and it’s still affecting us today, which is pretty crazy if you ask me.
A Sacrifice Not Pleasing to God: Cain
Cain, he’s like another example of someone who didn’t listen to God, and his story is pretty important for us to learn about obedience in worship, i think.
When Cain went and offered a sacrifice that wasn’t pleasing to God, he got all angry and stuff, instead of trying to figure out what God wanted from him, which is pretty strange.
The Bible says,
“And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?” (Genesis 4:6, KJV).
This verse, it shows me that God is always willing to guide us, but we gotta be willing to listen, you know, it’s like a two way thing.
Disobedience in Leadership: King Saul
King Saul, he’s a great example of how disobedience can lead to a big downfall, even for people in leadership positions, which is pretty interesting.
So like, when Saul didn’t obey God’s commands in battle, he showed that he wasn’t willing to trust God completely, which is pretty sad.
The Bible says,
“Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.” (1 Samuel 15:22, KJV).
This verse, it remind me that obedience is super important in our relationship with God, and we should always try to obey him.
Running from God’s Plan: Jonah
Jonah’s story, it’s a great reminder that we can’t run from God’s plan, no matter how hard we try, it’s like impossible.
So like, when Jonah refused to preach to Nineveh, he was trying to avoid what God had called him to do, which is pretty silly.
The Bible says,
“Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.” (Jonah 1:1-2, KJV).
This verse, it shows me that God has a plan for each of us, and it’s up to us to listen and obey, or else we might miss out on something big.
New Testament Characters Who Didn’t Listen to God

Betrayal in the Inner Circle
Me, I been thinkin bout them New Testament peoples who didn’t listen to God, and Judas Iscariot comes to mind, he was one of Jesus’ twelve apostles, right. The Bible says,
“And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself” (Matthew 27:5, KJV).
Judas, he done messed up big time, betrayin Jesus for thirty pieces of silver, it’s like, it still gives me the chills, you know. It’s a pretty stark reminder, even them closest to us can fall victim to the whispers of the enemy, like, it’s scary.
A Denial That Would Change Everything
So then, there’s Peter, another one of Jesus’ apostles, he swore he wouldn’t never deny Him, but, like, he did anyway, yeah. The Bible says,
“But he began to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And immediately the cock crew” (Matthew 26:74, KJV).
I can, like, relate to Peter’s fear, and his impulse to protect himself, but, like, his denial of Jesus, it would change his life, forever, you feel me.
A Lesson in Honesty and Obedience
The story of Ananias and Sapphira, in the early church, it’s another them cautionary tales, of what happens when we don’t listen to God, okay. The Bible says,
“But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?” (Acts 5:3, KJV).
They, like, didn’t listen, and it cost them they life, a pretty soberin reminder, of the importance of integrity, and submitin to God’s will, and all.
The High Cost of Refusal
Lastly, there’s the rich young ruler, who refused to follow Jesus’ teachings, and, like, it’s a big deal, yeah. The Bible says,
“And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions” (Mark 10:22, KJV).
This young man, he, like, refused to let go, of his wealth, and status, and it cost him, eternal life, a pretty stark reminder, of the high cost, of refusin to listen to God, you know. As I reflects on these stories, I’m reminded of them words, of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, “The cost of discipleship is costly because it costs a man his life.”
Reasons for Disobedience in the Bible
Fear and Doubt: The Story of Moses
I gotta say, fear and doubt is like, something I’ve been dealin with alot in my life, you know? There’s been times when I felt like God was all, “hey, do this thing,” but I’m like, “uh, I dont know if I can do that.” So yeah, I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who’s ever felt that way, right? Like, Moses, this super important bible dude, he didnt listen to God at first either, and thats kinda crazy.
When God told Moses to go lead the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt, Moses was all, “nah, I’m good,” pretty much, he didnt wanna do it, he said he wasnt good enough, and that he didnt have enough confidence, which is pretty weird, considdering God was all, “dont worry, I got your back.”
The Bible says,
“And Moses said unto God, Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt?” (Exodus 3:11, KJV).
Moses’s fear and doubt, it almost made him miss out on bein part of this huge miracle, which is pretty wild, I mean, I’ve learned that when God’s all, “hey, do this,” I just gotta trust that he’s gonna give me the skills and the guts to do it, you feel me?
Pride and Arrogance: The Story of King Saul
So like, another reason people dont listen to God, is cuz of pride and arrogance, and King Saul, the first king of Israel, he’s like, the poster child for this, right? When God told Saul to go destroy the Amalekites, and all their livestock, Saul was all, “yeah, yeah, got it,” but then he didnt really do it, he spared the good animals, and thats not what God said to do.
The Bible says,
“But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them: but every thing that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.” (1 Samuel 15:9, KJV).
Saul’s pride and arrogance, it made him think he was smarter than God, which is pretty hilarious, considdering, and he wanted to keep the good animals to sacrifice to God, but God was all, “no, I dont want any of that,” and thats why Saul lost his kingdom, which is pretty crazy.
Selfishness and Greed: The Story of Achan
So like, selfishness and greed, thats another reason people dont listen to God, and Achan, this dude in the Israelite army, he’s like, the perfect example, right? When God said to destroy Jericho, and not take any of the treasure, Achan was all, “yeah, yeah, got it,” but then he went ahead and took some of the treasure for himself, which is pretty stupid.
The Bible says,
“When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.” (Joshua 7:21, KJV).
Achan’s selfishness and greed, it didnt just get him killed, it also made the Israelite army lose their next battle, which is pretty wild, and I’ve learned that when I’m thinkin about myself, and what I want, I gotta stop, and think about what God wants, you know?
Lack of Faith and Trust: The Story of Peter
Lastly, not havin enough faith and trust, thats another reason people dont listen to God, and Peter, one of Jesus’s main dudes, he’s like, the best example, right? When Jesus told Peter to walk on the water, Peter was all, “okay, cool,” at first, but then he started doubtin, and he fell in the water, which is pretty funny.
The Bible says,
“And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.” (Matthew 14:28-30, KJV).
Peter’s lack of faith and trust, it almost got him killed, but luckily, Jesus was there to save him, and I’ve learned that when I’m in a tough spot, I just gotta trust that God’s got my back, and he’ll help me through it, you feel me?
Consequences of Not Listening to God
Separation from God
Me reflecting on them bible stories, about people who didnt listen to God, it’s like… they all had some pretty rough stuff happen to them, you know? One thing thats pretty clear, is when we ignore God’s voice, we kinda… drift away from him, and thats a big deal. When I dont listen to what God’s saying, I feel like I’m pushing him away, and thats not a good place to be, trust me.
The Bible says,
“For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins” (Hebrews 10:26, KJV).
This verse, it’s like… really important, cause it shows us how much God wants us to listen, and do what he says, or else, you know? When we refuse to listen, it’s like we’re giving him the cold shoulder, and that leads to some pretty bad stuff, seperation and all that.
Loss of Blessings and Opportunities
So, like, another thing that happens when we dont listen to God, is we miss out on some good stuff, blessings and opportunities, thats what I’m talking about. Take Moses, for example, he was supposed to talk to this rock, but he hit it instead, and thats why he didnt get to go to the Promised Land, what a bummer. I mean, I wonder how many times I’ve messed up, and missed out on somethin good, cause I didnt listen to God, it’s a pretty scary thought, to be honest.
Suffering and Hardship
The people in the bible, who didnt listen to God, they all went through some tough times, thats for sure. Like Jonah, he tried to run away from God, and look what happened to him, he got swallowed by a whale, thats crazy, right? This story, it’s like… it shows us, that when we dont listen to God, we can cause a lot of problems, for ourselves, and for others, thats not cool.
Negative Impact on Others
Lastly, when we dont listen to God, it’s not just us who suffer, it’s also the people around us, thats what I’ve learned. Like King David, he did a census, even though God told him not to, and then a lot of people died, it’s like… our disobedience can have some pretty serious consequences, for the people we care about, and thats not somethin we should take lightly, if you ask me.
Lessons Learned from Bible Characters Who Didn’t Listen to God
Me personally, i’ve had alot of trouble listening to Gods voice, like alot of times i dont even know what he’s saying. Its pretty easy to just do what i want, but then i think about all the people in the bible who didnt listen to God, and it didnt exactly turn out good for them.
The Importance of Obedience and Trust
I was thinking about jonah, and how he was told by God to go to this city, nineveh, and warn the people about judgement and stuff, but jonah had other plans, he didnt wanna do it. The Bible says,
“Now the word of the Lord came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.” (Jonah 1:1-2, KJV).
Jonah’s story is pretty crazy, he tried to run away from god, and it caused alot of problems, not just for him, but for alot of other people too.
The Dangers of Pride and Selfishness
Then theres this king saul, who was more worried about what people thought of him, than what god thought, and that didnt end well for him, he got replaced by david. The Bible warns us,
“Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.” (Proverbs 16:18, KJV).
This makes me think, i shouldnt be so full of myself, and i should try to follow gods plans, even when they dont make sense.
The Need for Repentance and Forgiveness
As i’m reading about all these people who didnt listen to god, i see a theme, its like, no matter how bad you mess up, god will always give you another chance, if you just turn back to him. C.S. lewis said somethin like,
“The only safe rule is to give more than you can, to surrender completely, and not to try to be at all costs a master of the destiny of the situation.”
It’s pretty cool, that no matter what, god loves us, and wants us to come back to him.
The Value of Learning from Mistakes and Failures
Lastly, i think about peter, one of jesus’ main disciples, he failed pretty bad when he denied jesus, but instead of giving up, he used that as a chance to learn, and get better. The Bible says,
“For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.” (Proverbs 24:16, KJV).
Peters story is pretty inspiring, it shows me, that even when i fail, i can still get back up, and try again, and god will be there to help me.
