My Experience with Baby Dedication in the Bible

I’ve been a pastor for a while now, and I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of a bunch of baby dedication ceremonies. People always seem to have a lot of questions about this stuff, so I figure it’s time to take a closer look at what the Bible says about it.

What is Baby Dedication, Anyway?

So basically, baby dedication is when parents make a public promise to raise their kid the way God wants them to. They’re asking for God’s help and protection and all that good stuff. It’s like, we’re acknowledging that our kids are a gift from God, and we’re just kinda… renting them, I guess. We’re in charge of taking care of them and teaching them about God.

What the Bible Says About Baby Dedication

There’s this one verse that sticks out to me:

“Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.” (Psalm 127:3, KJV).

It’s reminding us that our kids are a blessing from God, and it’s on us to teach them about Him. If you look at the Old Testament, there’s stories of parents dedicating their kids to God. Like, Hannah dedicated Samuel (1 Samuel 1:11, 28). And in the New Testament, there’s the whole thing with Jesus being presented at the temple as a baby, and Simeon and Anna prophesying about him (Luke 2:22-38).

Baby Dedication vs. Infant Baptism

Now I know some folks are thinking, “Wait, is baby dedication the same as infant baptism?” Nope. Infant baptism’s when a baby gets baptized into the faith, and some people think that means they’re automatically saved. But the Bible says salvation comes from faith, not from baptism or anything like that (Ephesians 2:8-9). Baby dedication’s different – it’s when parents publicly promise to raise their kid the way God wants, but it doesn’t mean the kid’s automatically saved or anything. As a pastor, I think it’s super important to understand the difference, and to teach parents how to raise their kids in a way that honors God.

Biblical Examples of Baby Dedication

Reflecting on baby dedication, I can see why it’s such a big deal in the Bible – I mean, what’s the Bible actually say about it, though?

A Mother’s Promise: The Dedication of Samuel

Samuel’s dedication story, man… that one really resonates. His mom, Hannah, is praying like crazy for a kid, and then God answers her prayer; she’s all, “alright, I’ll give him to you, God.”

The Bible says,

“And she vowed a vow, and said, O Lord of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the Lord all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head.” (1 Samuel 1:11, KJV).

I think Hannah dedicating Samuel to God is super powerful; it’s like, yeah, our kids should be set apart for the Lord – makes sense to me.

A Family’s Obedience: The Dedication of Jesus

Now, the dedication of Jesus is another big one. Mary and Joseph take him to the temple, and I guess back then it was the norm to, like, dedicate your kid to God and get ’em circumcised.

The Bible says,

“And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord; (As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;) And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.” (Luke 2:22-24, KJV).

Anyway, the point of all this is that obedience to God is a big deal, even when it comes to little things.

A Pattern of Devotion: Other Examples of Baby Dedication

Okay, so we got Samuel and Jesus, but turns out the Bible’s got more examples of this kinda thing. It’s like, there’s this whole theme of devotion we can learn from as parents.

Abraham and Isaac, the exodus deal – firstborn sons being consecrated… that kinda stuff – it’s like, yeah, it’s obvious we’re s’posed to commit our kids to God. Then, we gotta do our best to raise ’em right – God’s way, that is.

The Importance of Parental Commitment

Parenting’s quite the journey, if you think about it. So much responsibility’s resting on our shoulders.

The Bible says,

“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.” (Deuteronomy 6:4-7, KJV).

I mean, that passage is pretty clear, right? As parents, it’s on us to teach and model God’s love to our kids. We gotta go beyond just giving ’em food and shelter – we gotta feed their souls, too.

For me, being intentional about passing on my faith has been a game-changer. I mean, yeah, we take our kiddos to church and all, but it’s the day-to-day stuff that really matters. We gotta live out our faith, even when it’s hard, ’cause that’s what our kids are gonna see.

The apostle Paul puts it this way:

“And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.” (Ephesians 6:4, KJV).

That verse always reminds me that being a parent isn’t just about laying down the law. We gotta be about guidance, nurture, and showing our kids what it means to love and follow God.

The Role of the Church in Supporting Parents

As a church community, we’ve got a pretty important role to play here. I’m not saying we’ve got all the answers, but we can definitely provide a safe space for parents to connect and find support.

I love how the Bible puts it:

“And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.” (Acts 2:42, KJV).

Community was at the heart of the early church, and I think we can learn a thing or two from that. We can be there for each other, share our struggles, and remind each other that we’re not in this alone.

In Hebrews, it says:

“And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” (Hebrews 10:24-25, KJV).

To me, that passage is all about being intentional about our community. We gotta keep gathering, keep encouraging each other, and keep spurring each other on to love and good works.

The Significance of Prayer and Blessing

And finally, I think it’s crucial we talk about prayer and blessing. I mean, Jesus said it himself:

“Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 19:14, KJV).

That verse always gets me. Kids are precious in God’s eyes, and we should be praying for and blessing ’em regularly. We should be asking God to guide us as parents and to give us wisdom.

As a parent, I’ve learned to pray for my kiddo pretty regularly. It’s become second nature, really. And I think that’s what the Bible’s getting at in Mark 10:

“And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them. But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.” (Mark 10:13-14, KJV).

Jesus loves kids, plain and simple. And as a church, I think we can follow His example by praying for our kiddos, seeking God’s guidance, and being intentional about blessing and loving ’em the best we can.

What’s Baby Dedication All About?

Handing Our Little Ones Over to God’s Care

I’ve been a pastor for a while now, and I gotta say, doing baby dedications never gets old. Its like God hits me with the magnitude of responsibility – and the total joy – that comes with bringin’ up one of these tiny humans. Check out what the Bible says,

“Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.” (Psalm 127:3, KJV).

You know, this kinda makes me realize that my kid isn’t just mine, they belong to God too – and it’s down to me to commit ’em to his care. Doing a baby dedication’s all about sayin’, “God, you’re the boss here”. And I’m trusting He’ll keep ’em safe.

Giving Thanks for the Little Miracle

We also do baby dedications ’cause, let’s be honest, it’s a wicked opportunity to express some major gratitude. I mean, the Bible puts it like this:

“For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.” (Psalm 139:13-14, KJV).

This pretty much sums it up for me. Each one of my kids, in their own little ways, has surprised me in some crazy intricate ways. It’s pretty mind-blowing when you think on it. Doing a baby dedication’s like we’re saying a pretty serious thank you. We’re putting our hands up in the air, sayin’, “God, this life is off you – and you’re its master”.

Asking God to Have Their Back

And that leads me to another thing: when we do baby dedications we’re calling down His wisdom, His backing, on our little ‘un’s life. Get a load of this,

“And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.” (Luke 2:52, KJV).

Jesus, literally, grew in God-terms as he walked this earth, gaining folk’s favor and God’s simultaneously. Same with our little miracles: needs his strength, blessing – someone bigger than just momma and pappa pilin’ up their sails, that is.

Baby dedications mark the spot we point our hope towards the Man Upstairs, hopin’ – no knowin’, through the struggle – He’ll kinda lift us, help us shepherd our sheeps the way we’re supposed to.

How I Planned a Biblical Baby Dedication Ceremony

Pickin’ the Perfect Bible Passage

Been thinkin’ about what the Bible says on baby dedication and it’s like, we really gotta have God in every bit of our lives, especially our little one’s. Makes me feel kinda serious about all this.

First off when planning this whole baby dedication thingy, we gotta figure out which Bible passage to read, right. I personally think it’s best to go for one that’s special to us as a family and also talks about how awesome it is to dedicate our kid to God.

For example, check out this one part in 1 Samuel 1:27-28 –

“For this child I prayed; and the Lord hath given me my petition which I asked of him: Therefore also I have lent him to the Lord; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the Lord. And he worshipped the Lord there” (1 Samuel 1:27-28, KJV).

It reminds me our kiddos are like, a sweet gift from God, and giving ’em over to Him is a pretty strong move, faith wise.

Scribblin’ Down My Heart’s Desire in a Prayer

Putting a prayer together was pretty deep too. I took some time out and really just poured my heart onto paper; thinking about my kid’s future in faith and begging God to take the wheel.

Here’s a bit of what I wrote:

“Dear Heavenly Father, we come before you today to dedicate our child to you. We ask that you would guide and direct them as they grow and develop in their faith. Give us wisdom and discernment as parents, and help us to model your love and character to our child. We trust that you have a special plan for their life, and we commit to raising them in the ways of the Lord.”

Getting My Peeps from Church Involved

Anyway, last big thing, get everyone from church on board! It was seriously amazin’ gettin’ our whole community around us, in prayer and to be there at the ceremony, I even asked if the church leaders wanted to join in.

In Matthew 18:20 it’s like, God’s hangin’ out even if there’s only a couple of people there talkin’ about Him,

“For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them” (Matthew 18:20, KJV).

Having everyone there from church wasn’t just celebratin’ my kid bein’ born and all that – it was a bigger thing about realisin’ we’re all in this together; their faith included.

Why Baby Dedication Matters So Much for Us Christian Parents

As a pastor, I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of loads of baby dedications – every single one leaves me speechless, and reminiscing about just how massive this is for us Christian parents.

Stating Our Faith and Commitment to the World

By dedicating our babies to God, I reckon we’re saying out loud that we have faith and we’re promising to bring ’em up with good values. It’s kinda like, you know, “Hey God, this kid is super precious, so please help us show ’em what Your love is all about.” Bible says,

“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6, KJV).

Got me thinking – as parents, it’s pretty much all on us to shape our children’s worldview and make ’em good people, isn’t it?

How It Reminds Us of God’s Power and Love

Dedicating our babies also hits home that, realistically, they don’t really belong to us; but rather they’re an amazing gift from this all-knowing, and pretty loving, God. Bible goes like,

“Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward” (Psalm 127:3, KJV).

Honestly, I believe it’s a pretty big deal we should be kinda humbled, but also full of gratitude. We’re essentially trusting God to look over us and show us the ropes.

Keeping the Faith Whilst Parenting

Baby dedication pretty much boils down to this – be brave, trust Him, and listen to His advice on parenting. To be honest, I think we’re lucky we’re not winging it, because He’s got a plan. The Bible is all about,

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5, KJV).

By devoting our kids to God, what we’re actually promising to do is – well, what we said we’d do, really… that is, have faith in God during those crappy days and good, learn from Him, do as He asks, you get me? Now that does ask a lot from us in terms of patience, our capacity to forgive, and staying true. Then again, my word, I’d rather be under His guidance on this journey to see my kid mature and develop in their faith; instead of going off on my own tangent.
